So RW Apple the food critic for nytimes, wrote a serious piece highlighting many of shanghai’s more well known eateries. We at chifan were a little dissapointed that a man with such good connections couldn’t have come up with a few more hidden gems.
He did speak favorably of Ding tai fung and South beauty both of which we have already covered on Chifan…..but more importantly we were amused to find a mention of Guyi which has a branch on the second floor of the gym in our building complex…..it’s good but not sure it should be mentioned as one of shanghai’s finer chow spots……
The one restaurant mentioned that we have not been to was Chun, which you can assume we will be making a trip to. Not because the food is supposedly incredible but because this was the place Zhou en lai and Richard Nixon issued a joint comunique from in 1972….despite this momentuous occasion’s place in history the restaurant still only has four tables and still manages to be “a whole in the wall”……..how something like that can happen in China we can’t imagine…..
