Jesse Restaurant

No. 41 TianPing Road (6282-9260) - Easily some of the best Shanghainese food I have ever had. The Hong Shao Niu Rou is legendary. You have never had Chinese food this good. Recommended by Time Magazine, they say, “BEST RESTAURANT - Each region in China offers its own local treats, and Shanghai is no exception. Try down home Shanghainese fare at Jesse’s restaurant. The braised pork shoulder, drunken prawns and red dates stuffed with sticky rice are the best in town.” Tofu, fish head, mini shrimps, it was all amazing. I think the red dates stuffed with sticky rice was gross. The fish head was incredible. It’s marinated for hours and served on a blanket of fried spring onions. I dont think I’ve ever had fish that tender. This place is definitely a hole in the wall serving amazing traditional Chinese fare. I heard they opened another one in Xin Tian Di but I haven’t been there yet.

This restaurant is the only bit I miss about Shanghai (apart from the beautiful night view of the bund). On our short 4 days gourmet trip, we chose to dine there twice. Nearly all the dishes we ordered were heavenly - vinegared beancurd skin & mushroom (appertiser), marinated raw crab (not for the faint hearted) and braised pork (must try). Not a big fan of the dates with stuff sweet glutinous rice thou some of my frens loved it. The waiter highly recommended a transparent flat noodle fried with crab meat which is most expensive but the dish was not as fantastic as the rest. Ambience very local and nothing fancy, in fact its rather cramp. However, enjoyed the food immensely and we were tempted to pack them home  Also tried M on the bund - Sucks!!!
